What is a Tray Sealer?

A tray sealer is a packaging machine that seals pre-formed trays with a plastic film or lid to create a secure, airtight seal. Tray sealing is commonly used to protect perishable products and can include options like Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) or Vacuum Skin Packaging (VSP) to extend shelf life and preserve freshness.

What are Tray Sealers used for?

Tray sealers are used to pack a wide range of products, from fresh foods to ready-made meals. Their primary purpose is to maintain hygiene, improve shelf life, and create a tamper-evident seal. Many models can handle various tray sizes, sealing films, and packaging environments — including high-speed production lines and small-scale food operations.

Industries that use Tray Sealers

Tray Sealers are widely used in:

  • Ready meals and meal prep companies.

  • Cheese and dairy packaging.

  • Pasta and sauce manufacturers.

  • Fresh produce packers (e.g. cherry tomatoes, berries, leafy greens)

  • Foodservice and hospitality

  • Retail and convenience brands.

These machines are ideal for operations that require clean, consistent seals and high levels of product protection.

What Is Cycle Time on a Tray Sealer — and How Do You Measure It?

Cycle time refers to the time it takes for a tray sealer to complete one full sealing cycle — from tray loading through sealing and ejection. It’s one of the most important metrics in packaging line performance.

A shorter cycle time means more trays sealed per minute, making your operation more efficient. Depending on your setup, this could range from 2 to 6 seconds per cycle — influenced by tray size, film type, vacuum/gas (MAP), and automation level.

You can measure your tray sealer's cycle time manually with a stopwatch (e.g. time 10 trays and divide by 10), or you can calculate it based on trays per minute using the tool below.

Calculate Your Tray Sealer Cycle Time

Want to know your exact cycle time or trays per minute?

👉 Use our free Tray Sealer Cycle Time Calculator to get instant results — just enter how many trays per minute you're running, or how many seconds per cycle. The calculator will do the rest.

Why Is Cycle Time Important in Tray Sealing?

Cycle time directly affects your line speed, output per shift, and ultimately, your profitability.
A tray sealer with a slow or inconsistent cycle time can cause bottlenecks, backups on the infeed, or under-utilisation of upstream filling systems.

Whether you’re packing ready meals, proteins, produce, or dairy — shaving even half a second off your cycle time can mean thousands more trays sealed per day.

At PacMatix, we help Australian food producers improve cycle time through:

  • Better sealing profiles and film selection

  • Multi-cavity tooling matched to your tray size

  • Integration with denesters, loaders, and conveyors

  • Preventive maintenance and operator training
